In the beginning . . . The 10,000 trees Project began as an Earth Day planting organized by Waterloo Communities in Bloom in April, 2000. A sub-committee of this group recruited corporate sponsors, City of Waterloo involvement, and most importantly volunteers. The immediate success of this joint venture led to its becoming the city's premier Earth Day Event. For its first two years this activity was known simply as the Earth Day Planting but as interest grew, in terms of number of trees, volunteers and requests for specific plantings by service clubs and corporate sponsors, a definitive name was adopted in 2002 to recognize this greater community appeal: The 10,000 Trees Project. All these plantings contribute to our environmental health providing greenspace and a habitat area for wildlife. ____________________________________________________________________

Thank you to all who attended and planted trees. Your efforts are certainly appreciated today by the 10,000 Trees committee, but they will also be appreciated in many years to come by the Waterloo residents of tomorrow. _____________________________________________________________________
